The creation of PR degrees in the UK



  • The first UK undergraduate degree was launched at Bornemouth in 1989
  • The first UK postgraduate degree was launched at Stirling University in 1989 followed by the Manchester Metropolitan University
  • In 2003 a research was conducted which revealed that there were 22 PR or similar undergraduate degrees in Britain
  • It is estimated that there are 500 students currently taking a PR degree

Do you know what the figures are worldwide? I bet there are tons of pr students out there...eek! How to find a good job...

It seems that educational developments in the UK were stimulated by professional bodies. I read in PR: Critical debates and Contemporary practice (L'Etang and Pieczka) that in continental Europe PR is studied in departments of mass communications, in USA in departments of journalism and in UK mostly in departments of marketing and advertising. It would be interesting to research those differences..
